SUNDAY BRUNCH BY THE FIG RIG AT THE RHÔNE ROOM | SONOMA, CALIFORNIA

You cannot say that the team at The Girl and The Fig, headed by founder Sondra Bernstein and president John Toulze, don’t keep busy. Their food truck “The Fig Rig” has been delighting our taste buds for about three years already, and more recently The Rhône Room, a wine studio & farm, has become the new “baby” in the family.

I had been meaning to swing by The Rhône Room for some time, and when I heard that The Fig Rig would be doing brunch there on weekends between 10 am and 2 pm, my ears really perked up. Correct that, my taste buds perked up. That is how, last Sunday, I decided that I wanted something different for breakfast than the usual bowl of fruit or, on cold mornings, hot oatmeal, and I hopped in my car and drove cross-county (literally) for a taste of something scrumptious.

The big sign makes it easy to spot, but The Rhône Room is very conveniently located just outside Sonoma city limits at 20816 Broadway (aka CA-12).

Given that we had shifted to standard time (sun time) that day, I actually managed to get there around 10:30am. Of course, the first thing I did was check out the menu and place my order.

What would have been your choice? I picked the Everything Latke and also the Bowl O’Dunut Holes. A third item would have been waaaaay too much, but I was tempted, as my favorite way to eat is a little of this and a little of that. I was handed a small electronic pager and thought the wait time was perfect for taking pics.

As I paused at one of the tables to switch lenses I met this very nice couple who also stopped in for brunch. Of course we got to talking, taking pics of each other’s food and they were happy to help me with the donut holes while I was very happy to share. Their order included a Ham Hash Burrito and an Everything Latke as well. They also went inside to get those Bottomless Mimosas, which are bottomless because you get as many refills as you like. Filtered and chilled water was also available on a side table.

The lovely garden space you see above serves as a pet-friendly (pups said they are coming with me next time) wine tasting and picnic area for The Rhône Room. Behind it (though not pictured as the light was too strong) is a culinary and flower garden, aka the farm part of the set up, that probably supplies The Girl and The Fig, as well as their Suite D and possibly The Fig Cafe in Glen Ellen. Like I said, they keep busy!

The pager jingled in a way that left me with no doubt that my food was ready. A couple of minutes and my new friends’ order was up, too.

The Latke was prepared sandwich style, with cucumber, tomato, smoked salmon, cream cheese and red onion layered between two deep friend potato latkes. The idea and combination of flavors and textures was messy to eat but brilliant, though we found the latkes a bit oily.

Given the short acquaintance, I did not try the Ham Hash burrito, but was told that it was quite good. We all enjoyed the donut holes, which came with little tubs containing raspberry sauce and chocolate sauce. We did not like the chocolate sauce very much, but loved the raspberry, and when we ran out of donut holes, some finger licking happened (not me).

Once brunch was done and hands were cleaned, I thought it was time for a peek inside the tasting room. I must confess that, for as much as I love and appreciate good wines, I have to be in the mood to drink wine or even wine taste. So that morning I limited myself to taking photos and picking up the last remaining bag of divine Salted Chocolate Chip cookies by the talented Andrea Koweek of Crisp Bakeshop (as was).

A little sidebar about Crisp Bakeshop: alas, the actual coffee shop/bakery location is no more. It is really a bummer because they were the best in Sonoma, no competition. However, Crisp Bakeshop as a business still exists as Andrea now works with the catering team of The Girl and The Fig. We may no longer be able to stop in for a divine latte and pastry, but we can still most definitely order cookies, cakes, pies, macarons and other divine creations at this link. Plus, of course, occasional pop up events at The Rhône Room. You can view the post I had done about Crisp Bakeshop with lots of images of Andrea’s delights at this page.

Back to The Rhône Room: I may not have wine tasted, but I still can tell you that this wine studio lives up to its name by featuring over 85 Rhône wines produced in the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros Area, including The Girl and The Fig’s own wines. Grenache, Carignan, Viognier, Rosé, Syrah and Mourvèdre are among the most prominent varieties here.

The Rhône Room is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12 noon to 5:00 pm, while Mondays are by appointment only. Brunch by the Fig Rig was to be available up to Thanksgiving, but the change in temperatures (much colder here in the North Bay lately) shifted those plans, and brunch has come to a close with this weekend (I am typing this on Sunday night), at least for now.

But don’t despair, the Fig Rig continues to roll. As it happens, the next event will be next Saturday, November 17th, right on Sonoma Plaza, when the Fig Rig joins the “Lighting on the Plaza” ceremonies, the annual event that starts off the Holidays in Sonoma. Then, on Saturday, November 24th you will find the rig at Kenwood Vineyards. After that, you can follow their social media or check this page to keep track of where they will show up next.

Update of 01/26/19: Alas, The Rhône Room closed as of a few days ago. However, their wines will still be available through The Girl and The Fig restaurant as always. The Fig Rig will remain active, of course, so keep tracking to find out where they will be serving scrumptiousness next!
