Make Your Own Calamansi Ginger Ale with Edible Hawaiian Islands

A few weeks ago I photographed this very refreshing and flavorful soda for the Summer issue of Edible Hawaiian Islands Magazine (see cover image below).

When I visualized in my head what I wanted the finished image to look like I realized that, with all the props I have, I did not have plain, transparent tall glasses!! Luckily, my friend Valerie has enjoyed entertaining friends and family for many years, so her home is a treasure trove of props, and I gratefully borrowed a few.

Next on the agenda was finding calamansi, which I had never heard of before, so I had to start by googling for images. Good thing the San Rafael Farmers’ Market is barely half a mile from my home, and I dashed over to see if I could find this tiny little citrus fruit. And I did, I did, I did! One of the vendors had all sorts of citrus, including a box of little calamansi. If you have never tasted them, they are a cross between a tangerine and a lemon, both sweet and tart at the same time. You will be delighting in the flavor and scrunching up your face all in one. Perfect for a refreshing soda!

Have you ever made your own home-brewed soda? Depending on which method you choose, the process can be easy to moderate, but it is not at all difficult, and it is very satisfying. This easy recipe uses honey as a sweetener, and you can find it in the Summer 2014 issue of Edible Hawaiian Islands by clicking here.

If you decide to make it let me, or Edible Hawaiian Islands know how you enjoyed it by sharing your thoughts in the comments.
