Tails of Hawai’i – part 2

Who needs a time-out from life to look at cute wigglers? You do! I do! We all do!

Indeed it is time for the follow up on my previous Tails of Hawai’i post, so here is part 2! I photographed these cutie pies during the Da Kine Canine Festival in Kailua (O’ahu), a fun wiggly event organized by the awesome people of Island Dog Magazine. Except for one, and we’ll get to that later.

The line was long (so this is just a selection of images) and I worked as fast as I could. This time I had the chance to set up a photo booth with backdrop in a covered area, so there was no direct sunlight moving around to either help or hinder my work. But we were in a very shaded area of a covered parking, so I figured a touch of fill flash would work well to open up shadows.

I do know that they are all adorable, but, except for a couple, I don’t really know the names of these cutie pies, so if you do, please fill in the blanks for me in the comments below.

And I just had to include these two little girls with their pups in the post! The portrait below is one of my absolute favorites, ever! I have a sequence of about 3-4 images of her and her little pup, but I really love the expression in this one.

And here comes the superstar, Miss Hokulani, or the most elegant Pomeranian in Hawai’i, who clearly channeled Coco Chanel for this occasion. Hokulani has also been a cover girl for Island Dog Magazine, as well as featured in several pawesome calendars. You can see more about her here.

The Da Kine Canine Festival also featured a costume contest, so quite a few of the wigglers showed up wearing costumes, like this adorable little witch above.

And below is the exception, as I photographed this sweet girl for the cover of Island Dog Magazine on the porch of Washington Place, a historic landmark building in Honolulu and also the residence of the current Governor of Hawai’i. Her name is Kanoa, which menans “the liberator” in Hawaiian, and she is a Shetland Sheepdog. At the time of this portrait, Kanoa’s human dad, such Neil Abercrombie, was Governor of Hawai’i, so Kanoa was First Dog.
